What Triggers Scoliosis Pain?

What is scoliosis? Scoliosis is a kind of bone condition wherein the spinal column is curved. If you suffer from this condition, your spine will mostly be S-shaped or C-shaped. Scoliosis can either be mild or severe depending on the symptoms that you experience. You may feel pain in your back or your posture may be affected. This condition is caused by several things - heredity, medical condition and weak bones.

Normally, scoliosis pain is uncommon. However, there are things that may trigger pain. Below are some exercises that many people do that can cause scoliosis pain to arise.

Weight Lifting - Scoliosis results in a curved spine. When you spine is curved, your muscles are pulled back and contracted. Therefore, if you do weight lifting exercises, your back will suffer a lot. Lifting weights will put pressure on the muscles of your back and this will definitely trigger scoliosis pain.

Yoga - Yoga is good for the body because it helps in improving the blood circulation and flexibility of a person. However, if you have scoliosis, you should avoid doing yoga exercises. Most yoga poses will require you to bend forward and backward. Bending, especially backward bend, will place a lot of pressure on your back which can cause extreme pain. Your spine is in a C-shaped or S-shaped position therefore it would be difficult to bend it like the others. You may do other yoga exercises but you should tell your instructor about your condition. Some of the poses you need to avoid include cobra and wheel.

Lower Body Exercises - Experts believe that exercises geared toward the lower body exercises are not good for people who have scoliosis. When you work out your lower body, the nerves and bones of the spine are largely affected. As a result, pain will emerge. You need to choose exercise routines that will not put pressure on your lower body and your lower back. Some of the exercises you need to avoid include squats and lunges.

What are other things you should do in order to avoid scoliosis pain?

First, you should avoid activities that will require you to use only one side of your body. Proportion is very important if you have scoliosis. You should always make sure that your muscles are used in a balanced way to avoid pain. This means that you should not carry things such as bags with only one hand. Try using both of your hands always.

Second, you need to improve your posture. Proper posture is very important in order to keep the spine in place. If you often slouch, there will be a high tendency for your muscles and bones to contract and your nerves will be compressed. When this happens, you will feel a lot of pain.

Third, you need a bone-friendly diet. This means that you need to eat foods that are rich in calcium. Calcium will help your bones become stronger. When your bones are strong and sturdy, you will be able to avoid bone fractures and other bone conditions such as scoliosis.

Scoliosis can usually be treated by a physical therapy, such as osteopathy. Although more pronounced conditions may require surgery.
